Driving around Monahans one might have noticed all the beautiful flags waving on Monday, February 20, 2012.  The flags are a result of a fundraiser by the Monahans Rotary Club.  Last year's President of the Rotary Club, Mark Drea, came up with the project to benefit the community and to make the town look nice.  For $50, businesses in Monahans can purchase a flag.  The Rotary Club will place the flag in front of the business on President's Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, the Fourth of July and Veterans Day.  Members of the club split into three groups and put the flags up and take them down.  All in all, it takes each group about 45 minutes in the morning and 45 minutes in the evening to perform the task.

If the weather is bad, the members will pick the flags up early.  David Cutbirth allows the club to use his theater to store the flags.  They have a place to hang the flags to dry at the theater if they are wet.  The flags are encased in bags and placed on shelves.  The flags never touch the ground.

At least 90% of the money raised will go towards local scholarships and the rest will go towards Polio Research.  The Rotary Club's primary charity is Polio Research.  Mark Drea said, "Polio has almost been eradicated in the world."  Bill Gates matches all the funds raised by Rotary Clubs nationwide for Polio Research.
