Students Recognized

The MWPISD Board of Trustees met on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 7:30 PM. The Administration and Board recognized students who advanced passed District to Regionals and State. The MHS Debate Team, Cheyenne Smith and Parth Patel are District Champs and went on to Regionals. They have been partners for the last four years. The Boys and Girls Tennis team had a boy, a girl and boy/girl partners go on to Regionals this year.

The Girls Golf Team won District Runner-up and placed 3rd at Regionals, missing State by 6 strokes. Jenna Jernigan, a senior, won Academic All State this year. After missing part of the season due to an illness, Pedro Cano came back to be the only Regional qualifier and was a 2nd place medalist in Golf.

The MHS Baseball team placed third in the District. Kahil Cooper placed 4th at State in the 400 Meter Dash. Kahil Cooper set a new regional record in the 400 Meter Dash. Trianna McCalister placed 1st in the Triple Jump, 2nd in the 300 Meter Hurdles and 3rd in the 100 Meter Hurdles. Trianna broke the Monahans record in the 300 Meter Hurdles. She also earned 24 points at State placing her tied for 7th place. Miranda Reyes qualified for Regionals in the 3200 Run.

Mr. Richardson advised the Board that Sami Santallian won the golden ticket at Disney World to participate in the next American Idol contest. Sami was with the MHS Band at Disney World for their trip.

Nora Jasso administered the Oath of Office to Bo Rose, District 6. Kay Rankin-Swan was unable to attend the meeting and will receive her Oath of Office for District 7 at a later date. The Board and Administration presented Bo Rose with a gift commemorating his 10th year on the Board. The Board elected to keep their officers the same for the 2012-2013 school year. Bo Rose-President; Donna Garcia-Vice President; Kay Rankin-Swan-Secretary and Raymond Reyes-Alternate Secretary.

Enrollment as of April 30, 2012 was 2016 which is up 54 from last year. The District had over 2,000 kids enrolled every month since September. The Board of Trustees will leave for training on June 14, 2012 to attend the 2012 Summer Leadership Institute in San Antonio. Property 507 E. A St. was approved for sale to Oscar Aguilar. Property 502 E. A St. was approved for sale to Ernesto Muniz.

The preliminary estimate of taxable value made by Arlice Wittie, Chief Appraiser, was presented to the Board. The mineral value is $1,258,057,724 and the local value is $153,079,080 for a total of $1,411,136,804. The total is up about $156 million from last year.

Mr. Richardson nominated and presented The Monahans News and Mudville News with certificates naming them to the 2012 Media Honor Roll. To be nominated, the media representatives have to meet the following requirements: (1) make the effort to get to know the superintendent, board president, and district’s mission and goals; (2) report school news in a manner that is fair, accurate, and balanced; (3) give a high-profile position to good news about schools; (4) visit the schools; and (5) maintain a policy of no surprises by sharing information with school representatives. Bo Rose said, "We really appreciate what y'all do."

The Board approved a paving repair proposal from Schell Hamer Paving Company of Wickett. The District received only one bid for this project. The bid was $3.00 a square foot and includes putting stripes on the parking lots, completely redoing some lots, as well as patching and seal coating the lots. Parking lots at Tatom, Sudderth, Walker Junior High, MEC, MHS, Complex and the Field House will be repaired or redone this summer. Raymond Reyes stated, "As nice as we have all the campuses looking now, the parking lots need to be redone. It will be money well spent."

A Resignation from Cristal Gonzalez (Sudderth) was approved by the Board. The Trustees approved the retirement of Foydell Mitchell (MHS) and Mickey Mitchell (MHS). Mrs. Mitchell has been teaching and coaching for 28 years. Mickey Mitchell has been teaching and coaching for 26 years. The Board approved hiring Jennifer Stocks (Tatom); Karrah Iglehart (Tatom); Danna Feathers (Tatom); Amiee Shepley (Sudderth); Kandra Davis (Sudderth); Cameron Swarb (WJHS) and Sean Merrick (MHS). The Board approved the 2012-2013 salary schedule.
