School of Vocational Nursing - Monahans Extension

The Odessa College School of Vocational Nursing Monahans Extension graduation was held on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 7:00 PM at the MHS Auditorium. Jeppie Wilson performed the invocation and benediction.  Debbie Chaney, Administrative Assistant, signed the song “Wind Beneath My Wings.”

Ian Roark, Dean of Career, Technical and Workforce Education addressed the attendees and thanked them for their support. He said to the graduates, “It is very difficult to become a licensed nurse. We are very proud of you.”

Ann McCalister, R.N., Instructor of Nursing, introduced guest speaker Candy Powell, ESN, RN. Candy Powell has been in nursing for 34 years. Mrs. Powell said, “Congratulations on your achievement.  It is a difficult program, you be proud of your achievement. Nursing has changed since I became a nurse. For one, nursing has become extensive and the hours are longer, because of the nursing shortage. One thing that has not changed is nursing is a caring profession and has always been that way. Good luck each of you wherever your career takes you."

Nancy Kilgore, R.N. Director of Nursing, said, “I want to thank the OC main campus for all their support. Some of you have wanted to quit weekly or even on a monthly basis, but you got out of bed anyway. Your perseverance has paid off. When we first met I called you by your names.  Then you became my students.  Now you are friends and fellow nurses.” Mrs. Kilgore informed the attendees that this is the largest nursing graduating class from Odessa College. The Class has 25 graduates.

Mrs. Kilgore introduced Christina Vinson, student speaker. Christina addressed the instructors and said, “Thank you for teaching us integrity, empathy, patient advocacy, and responsibility.  To Debbie, thank you for being that little piece of sanity when everything was chaos.”

Family and Friends pinned the graduates. Dean, Ian Roark presented certifications to the graduates. The Class of 2012 performed the lamp lighting ceremony. Florence Nightingale was dubbed “The Lady with the Lamp” after her habit of making rounds at night. Nightingale laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment, in 1860, of her nursing school at St Thomas' Hospital in London, the first secular nursing school in the world. Johnni Baker sang “Go Light Your World” as the graduates lit their lamps. The Class of 2012 then said the “Nightingale Pledge.”
