Monahans Volunteer Fire Department

October 7th-13th is National Fire Prevention Week. The Monahans Volunteer Fire Department visited CDO, Head Start, Child's Play, Cullender Kindergarten and Tatom Elementary. Students from Tatom Elementary drew posters depicting ways to prevent fires.

The Monahans Volunteer Fire Department talked to the kids about fire prevention and gave them fire safety tips. The firemen were dressed in their gear to show the kids what they look like when they are fighting a fire. They also took the children for rides on the fire trucks.

Volunteer Fireman Randy Crabtree said, "We do this to help the kids recognize us when we are fighting a fire. Kids are sometimes scared of us and hide. We want them to know that we are there to help."

It is important to have a home fire escape plan that prepares your family to think fast and get out quickly when the smoke alarm sounds. What if your first escape route is blocked by smoke or flames? That's why having two ways out is such a key part of your plan. This year’s theme,“Have 2 Ways Out!”, focuses on the importance of fire escape planning and practice.
