To celebrate two firsts with fall 2012 commencement

ODESSA (Dec. 2, 2011) – Two firsts will occur at the Odessa College fall commencement this Friday.

Even in an oil boom economy when college enrollment usually decreases, Odessa College’s fall 2012 graduating
class will be the largest for a fall semester in the college’s history.  In addition, for the first time at an
Odessa College commencement ceremony, OC will honor graduate candidates for certificates.

The college will recognize 171 graduate candidates in 32 degree--programs, 109 candidates receiving certificates, and 38 students for successfully completing their Adult Basic Education requirements.

The commencement ceremony will held at the Odessa College Sports Center at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14.  Odessa’s
newly elected mayor, David Turner, and OC graduating students Clayton Gotcher and Miriam Young will be the
featured speakers for the evening.

Mayor Turner retired from the Odessa College board of trustees after serving more than six years.  He continues
to be a strong supporter of Odessa College and to serve as vice president on the OC Wrangler Club Board.

Clayton Gotcher is a past president of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges,
and is receiving his associate of arts degree in general studies.  Miriam Young is the current vice president
of services in Phi Theta Kappa and is receiving her associate of arts – teaching, early childhood.
